When Does a Child Need Speech Therapy?

Your child may benefit from an evaluation if they exhibit any of the following signs, which are often addressed through pediatric therapy or occupational therapy: not babbling or using gestures by 12 months, or not talking by 18 months; difficulty being understood by family members or peers at ages 2 to 3 years; struggling to follow simple commands or answer basic 'who, what, where' questions; repeating sounds, syllables, or words frequently (stuttering); and showing extreme frustration when trying to communicate their needs, which may also be helped with physical therapy.
